The Town of Rye seeks a caretaker to perform a role that can be broadly described as keeping an eye on the Town's properties and performing semi-skilled maintenance on an as needed basis. the incumbent is responsible for opening and closing Crawford Park daily, patrolling both Crawford Park and Rye Town Parks, and the Town Dock at various times and reporting conditions, damage and any safety issues. The Caretaker monitors even usage, emergency response and submits an evening report to Town Officials. The Caretaker provides support and back up to the Town's park attendants and performs minor landscaping, vehicle maintenance and handyman repairs. Schedules and coordinates monthly visits from service providers.

The incumbent reports directly to the Town Administrator and works closely with the Town's Director of Grounds and Facilities. In lieu of monetary compensation, the caretaker resides in the Caretaker Cottage at 33 Lincoln Avenue, Rye Brook, NY 10573. The position calls for twenty (20) hours of work per week.

Examples of work include, but are not limited to:

Evening grounds and facilities checks at Crawford and Rye Town Parks and the Town Pier are to follow a well-established routine. Responsibilities include: making sure all doors and gates are locked; picking up in and around the facilities as necessary; making sure all receptacles are emptied; ensuring bathrooms are clean, empty and locked for the evening. Replenishing paper goods and soap, as needed. Locking up property entrances at night. Keeping a record of observed activity. Providing a nightly report with time and date stamped photos.

Ensure all social events are packed up at the end of the evening. Provide any support park staff needs to encourage the prompt and cooperative departure of guests.

Minor grounds-keeping activities could include: snow removal, de-icing pathways, helping with minor landscaping, removing litter or debris. Simple handyman tasks such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical and painting. Maintain all flags at the parks, adjust them to full-staff or half-staff when necessary, have flags ordered by the office as needed. Keep a vehicle and large equipment maintenance log for both parks.

Handle after hour emergencies at Crawford Park and Rye Town Park. Notify Park directors and Town Administrator of these happenings.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES: Must have a driver’s license and own a vehicle. Good knowledge of building and cleaning practices, supplies and equipment and the ability to use them economically and efficiently; ability to make semi-skilled plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical repairs a plus; ability to perform a variety of routine cleaning and maintenance tasks; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; thoroughness; reliability; physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position.
